Elephants drop in for dinner at Zambia's Mfuwe Lodge

At Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley at this time of year, a family of elephants pass the reception desk on their way through the lobby to get to the fruits of a wild mango tree in the lodge’s grounds.

It’s an astonishing sight — and fortunately unique.

The Mfuwe Lodge, found in the Mfuwe region of the South Luangwa National Park, is set amidst the best game viewing area of the entire park. This award winning lodge exhibits game abundance and offers a safari experience infused with suspense and exhilaration; there is no better place to seek out the rare African wild dog and other endemic species.

Situated beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany trees, Mfuwe Lodge sprawls around two lagoons offering stunning views from every room. The wildlife abundance is instantly obvious from the lodge with giraffe, buffalo, antelope and crocodile being regular visitors to the lagoons. There are eighteen thatched chalets that open up to grant spectacular panoramic views, each with its own peaceful, shaded veranda and en-suite bathroom furnished with a large and luxurious walk in shower. The expansive, open plan main lodge combines reception, lounge, bar and dining areas, all under thatch, designed and decorated to compliment the magnificent surroundings. Other shared areas include a spacious deck with pool, sublimely refreshing after a morning drive in the African heat; a library, dedicated to African history, culture, tradition and nature conservation; and a fire pit, ideal for after dinner tale telling. Relaxation opportunities are furthered with the presence of a spa.

The activity emphasis is the wildlife, with game drives, bird watching and guided walks offered. The morning drives provide excellent opportunity to catch the elephants descending or hippos returning to the lagoon; the balmy late afternoons see predators preparing for their dusk activities; and watching the sun retire with a drink in hand whiles away the final moments before the nocturnals awake – an endless stream of experiences guaranteed to enthral and amaze.

The allure of Mfuwe lies in the glimpse it gives of an Africa, untouched, unspoiled and unforgettable.

What is Campfire?

Campfire is a place where published items with the most participation go so that everyone knows what’s hot. The more people that collaborate around an item the hotter the fire gets.

Starting a Campfire

Campfires get started when a published item in the Explore section recieves a high rate of participation from other members.

What is Stoking?

Stoking is a form of fire starting. When you stoke an item on safarious you’re basically promoting as a campfire worthy. Stoking has a higher value over comments and views taking place on an item.

The more stokes the higher the chances an item will catch and turn a campfire.
