The challenge of photographing a baby elephant

On my recent trip to the Sabi Sands I was fortunate to see this baby elephant on a couple of occasions. Photographing small calves can be a challenge because the herd surrounds them when it moves and, when browsing, the mothers tend to keep their bodies between the calf and any perceived threat (such as humans in a viewing vehicle - even in a reserve where animals normally permit close encounters).

Baby elephants are undoubtedly cute. They are even more cute when they try to walk in their ill-fitting skin. It is always worth spending time with the herd and gaining its confidence and this time it paid off photographically too.

What is Campfire?

Campfire is a place where published items with the most participation go so that everyone knows what’s hot. The more people that collaborate around an item the hotter the fire gets.

Starting a Campfire

Campfires get started when a published item in the Explore section recieves a high rate of participation from other members.

What is Stoking?

Stoking is a form of fire starting. When you stoke an item on safarious you’re basically promoting as a campfire worthy. Stoking has a higher value over comments and views taking place on an item.

The more stokes the higher the chances an item will catch and turn a campfire.
